GOLF CART PROGRAMS AND REGULATIONS

Golf Cart Transportation Program - City of Palm Desert

The City of Palm Desert’s Golf Cart Transportation Program is intended to help develop a convenient transportation system that is safe and environmentally sensitive, generating zero auto emissions. Authorized on January 1, 1993, by California Assembly Bill 1229, the program has expanded the use of golf carts beyond transportation in and around golf courses and other recreational amenities by allowing carts on more public streets and private roads.

In Palm Desert, permitted drivers are allowed to use golf carts for travel to schools, parks, businesses, shopping centers, and government offices.  The program’s long-term goal is to provide full golf cart access throughout the community.  For more information, please click here.

City of Indio Golf Cart Transportation Program

In 2011, the City of Indio adopted a new Golf Cart Transportation Program which allows drivers of properly equipped golf carts to travel along designated pathways, sidewalks, and bicycle lanes in the City.  The program requires the golf cart and the driver to meet certain minimum standards, and the golf cart must have a current permit.

Street legal golf cars

Street legal golf cars are commonly known as NEVs (Neighborhood Friendly Vehicles) and provide a quick and enjoyable way for residents to get around their own community.

There are many advantages to using a street legal golf car instead of a car such as saving on fuel costs and being more environmentally friendly. Many states allow golf cars to travel on roads legally as long as they fulfill certain safety requirements such as:

1. It should have a maximum seating capacity for four.
2. 35 mph should be the maximum speed capacity of the golf car.
3. A seat belt for every seat is a must.
4. It must have exterior mirrors, interior mirrors and reflex reflectors.
5. A vehicle identification number, windshield and brakes are a must for the golf car.
6. The vehicle must have the manufacturer's certificate of origin as a slow speed vehicle.
7. 2,200 pounds is the maximum weight limit for the golf cart.
8. The car must have a headlight, rear and front turn lamps, tail and stop lamps.
